In the last 10 years, Saudi Arabia’s retail landscape has undergone a shift that is so profound, it’s like stepping into time travel.
From the old-world charm of bustling souks that sprawl through city streets, brimming with street food, fabrics, and handicrafts to modern & mega shopping malls, with high-end luxury boutiques, global retail chains and experiential dining experiences.
The entertainment industry has opened doors to a world of cinematic experiences, marking the start of an exciting new chapter in Saudi Arabia. Film festivals, a cornerstone of global film cultures, have also started to dot the cultural landscape of Saudi Arabia.
Furthermore, the Kingdom’s commitment to digital transformation has not only diversified the economy but also revolutionized how Saudis shop. From in-store cafes to virtual reality zones, Saudi retailers are crafting immersive experiences that fuse tradition with innovation.
When visiting the Saudi Arabia Pavilion at EXPO 2020 in Dubai, I remember learning then that the Kingdom has embarked on an ambitious journey of transformation that reaches into all aspects of life – social, economic, and cultural. Central to this transformation are the mega projects launched throughout the Kingdom, each representing a significant stride towards realizing Vision 2030.
We can all agree that retail is the thread that stitches the fabrics of all elements within these mega projects. Whether it is shopping, dining, entertainment, or every day services; each merchandise category is carefully curated specific to the needs and wants of its target catchment.
As we stand on the brink of a new era, one thing is clear: The evolution of retail in Saudi Arabia is far from over.
And my role as a retail development consultant allows me to have a front row seat to experiencing all of this magic unfolding right in front of my eyes !
